Custom GoHighLevel Sidebar Menus — Rename, Hide & Reorder Navigation per Client

Rename, hide, reorder and re-icon the GHL sidebar per client, dock it left or right, and hide the account switcher — the most common white-label leak — all with reversible DOM transforms.

The challenge

What made this hard

Agencies sell simplified CRMs. A fitness-studio client shouldn't see “Opportunities” (they call them “Leads”), doesn't use half the modules, and definitely shouldn't see a switcher listing the agency's other clients. GHL provides no per-location navigation control.

The solution

How I built it

Three coordinated features, all configured visually and applied by the same injected script:

Custom Menu

Rename any sidebar item, hide modules entirely, reorder by drag and swap icons — with null meaning “keep the GHL default”, so configs survive GHL adding new menu items.

Sidenav Position

Dock the rail left or right per location, implemented as real DOM movement because CSS row-reverse proved unreliable on GHL's live shell.

Hide Location Switcher

Removes the sub-account switcher for client-facing locations — closing the most common white-label leak: a client discovering the agency's whole roster.

Under the hood

Technical highlights

Every transform is reversible and idempotent: the applier stamps original values on nodes and restores them exactly when config is cleared. A debounced MutationObserver reapplies after GHL's SPA re-renders, walking only changed subtrees. Like every feature in the suite, saving a menu can never activate an unrelated theme — writers upsert with independent semantics so features stay fully isolated.

The outcome

Results

  • Per-client navigation without browser extensions or GHL source access
  • Zero support tickets from clients “finding” other accounts since rollout
  • Menu edits ship instantly through the shared config CDN
What the client said

A note from the client

"The account switcher was our biggest white-label leak — clients could see our whole roster. That's gone now, along with all the modules they never used. Every client sees a clean, renamed menu that actually makes sense to them. The 'where do I find this' tickets basically dropped off a cliff. Clean, reliable, exactly what we asked for." — Jessica Tran, Agency Owner, BrightPath Digital. Rated 5 out of 5. Reviewed January 2025.
